When arranging the details of your wedding, creating a wedding gift registry is more often than not at the top of the list of things to do. For youthful newlyweds, a wedding gift registry can help guests choose the gifts that you most require as you begin your new life together. For couples who are previously established in life, stereotypical wedding gifts may not be needed; toasters, carving knife sets, and wine glasses are bits and pieces that you probably already own. Fortunately, couples can register at a increasing number of locations, from home improvement outlets to sports stores and online merchants, so there is something out there for every couple.
Here are a few guidelines to follow when setting up your wedding gift registry.
1. Open your gift registry at least six months in advance or more so that guests have sufficient time to choose and purchase a wedding gift. Remember that registries are a convenience for your guests, and that guests are not limited to the registry when choosing a wedding gift. While many guests will buy a gift from your bridal registry, some may prefer to select your wedding gift personally. If you plan to use the same gift registry for several occasions (such as engagement parties, showers, and the wedding itself), include an abundant selection of gifts so that guests have lots to choose from.
2. Register your wedding gift registry online. This makes it easier for guests to shop, and even purchase, your wedding gift from wherever they may be. Be sure that the store(s) will ship gifts to whatever location your guests specify. Check wedding gift suppliers return and exchange policies carefully to ensure you can exchange any gifts which may be duplicated or not in working order.
3. Consider opening bridal registries in more than one store. This allows guests more choice in not only what to buy, but how much to spend on your wedding gift. If having multiple gift registries seems confusing to you, there are many bridal registry websites such that allow you to create a single gift registry for items from multiple stores. You can even include non-traditional wedding gift requests, such as travel, money, and restaurant certificates. Although requesting cash or donations to honeymoon funds and so forth has been traditionally considered poor etiquette, the practice has become more popular with the use of wishing well poems. Nevertheless, some people do find requests for cash as a wedding gift to be in poor taste, so keep in mind how your guests may react to such a request. A good way to ask for money is to use a wishing well card, this card can have a sweet poem explaining to your guests that you have everything you need for your house, but money would really be appreciated.
4. Please do not include your gift registry information in the body of your wedding invitation wording. A small card matching the invitation should contain the wedding gift registry details and be given to your guests along with their invitation.
5. Keep track of who bought each wedding gift for you. Send a personalized thank-you note to each guest to show how much you appreciated not only the gift, but his or her participation in your special day.
